Half Moon Lake O-Meet
April 23th, 2011
Meet Director: Lew Kidder

There was both good news and bad news in the aftermath of the day-before-Easter meet at Half Moon Lake. The good? The weather couldn’t have been better – sunshine, 60’s, just a great day to be out in the woods. The bad? The course setter got the scale wrong for measuring the courses. He (may he remain forever nameless) thought it was 300 meters between the north-south magnetic lines on the map – but as it turns out, the distance is really 400 meters. Yipes!

As a practical matter, that meant each course actually measured 33% longer than advertised. Light Yellow was 3.1 K instead of 2.3K. Orange was 3.8K, not 3.0K. Green was closer to a normal Red in length – 6.5K instead of the advertised 4.9. And the Red was actually closing in on a standard Blue (is there a “purple”?) measuring 9.9K – and running a fair amount longer than that.

Congratulations are due to Mike Ryan and Finn Knudsen for persevering through the entire Red course, even though it took them the better part of four hours. In fact, the orienteering stuff was just half of Finn’s workouts that day – he had ridden his bicycle out to Half Moon Lake from Ann Arbor in the morning, and he rode back after finishing the course.

Postscript: On Sunday afternoon, Mssr Knudsen sent a note extending thanks (tongue-in-cheek, we’re sure) for the “memorable course” and extolling the “abundance of this lovely plant” (http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/hepatica_nobilis.shtml). And I thought he was talking about the Russian olive.
