Waterloo Headquarters O-Meet
April 7, 2012
Meet Director: Lew Kidder

Some 100 separate souls turned out in glorious weather to open the Southern Michigan Orienteering Club’s 2012 spring season. Only problem? Ordinarily, visibility in the local woodlands is quite good in early April – but given the historically warm temperatures experienced in March, the underbrush, especially the autumn olive, had already leafed out, which meant sight lines were considerably more restricted than expected.

The red and green courses at SMOC meets have been using electronic scoring since late 2010, but this was the first opportunity for those running the orange course to do the same. Five elected that option, including Michelle Green, who dashed around the 4.4K, 11-control course in 1:07:14. The only additional cost for doing the “electronic” thing is $2/meet to rent the timing stick – which is about 2.5” long and attaches to a finger with a Velcro strap. When you find the right control, you insert the stick into the timing device attached to the control and a satisfying “beep” results. And when you reach the finish, you insert the stick into two additional slots and are promptly rewarded with a printout of all your splits over the entire course. Note: If you did electronic timing at the Waterloo meet, a link to an on-line site for those splits – and for those of others who did the course – can be found here.

Special thanks goes to Cooper Green, Michael Li, and Rick Waldo for helping pick up controls after the event. And much additional gratitude goes to Cooper & wife Michelle for offering newcomers some instruction in basic orienteering. It definitely helped create a more satisfactory experience.

FOUND: Near control #10 on Green course, which was also control #13 on the Red. REI black long-sleeve, half-zip top, men's medium. Also red, short-sleeve t-shirt, with 2010 Fight For Air Climb embossed in white on the front. If they are yours, speak up.
