Peach Mountain O-Meet
May 5, 2012
Meet Director: Jens Christiansen

Peach Mountain, soaked from heavy rain Thursday night, saw 70 degree temps turn the woods into a sauna for the 106 orienteers tackling newbie meet director Jens Christiansen's debut courses.

Al Newman arrived early and was the guinea pig first runner for the Red course. Al established a benchmark 82:28 that would stand for two hours until Igor Guskov blazed his way to first. After fast times last week at the challenging and green Halfmoon Lake course approached ten minutes per kilometer, an hour flat was predicted to win. Igor very nearly had it at 63:50. Andrew Rowan recovered from some early troubles in the tricky green reentrants near the radio telescope to take second in 76:21. For the most part, if you got lost somewhere, Jens used that spot because he has been lost there.

Flying Pig XVI A-meet runners dominated the top spots on Green. Oleg Koptelov passed Mike Keating as both men headed to #12, as Oleg ran 88:54, falling to second when Alex Izzo, unfazed by a cast on his right arm, took first in 76:44. This winter, Jens finished a scouting session and ran into Alex heading in for training - it paid off!

Orange was far and away the most popular course, with 42 participants in 21 starts. Orange was also the steepest course, owing to Jens's desire to feature the old car, which is totally sweet, but also totally at one of the lowest points in the woods - roughly 35 meters below the telescopes.

Orienteering USA course guidelines say about Orange: "Easy legs near Yellow in difficulty should be mixed with challenging legs near Red". Jens took this to heart for Orange (some may argue about the redness of #9), but perhaps missed the section that said, "A typical mistake is failure to reduce length due to climb". Kit Moran had the most success in the humidity and climb and "near Red" to win in 97:13. Second place was had with just 25 seconds as Bob Climie edged out Peter & Emmett's crew with his 100:15. Hopefully the many Orienteering Experiences on Orange enjoyed the epic terrain and old car.

Mary Joscelyn breezed through the White course in just 39:30. Mike Smith's group and Ed Nicholson's party tied for second at a hundred minutes.

Second to run on Yellow, Bill Girardin set the mark at 62:20, until Great Lakes Adventure Club #1 finished in 57:15. Tom & Tom & Friend finished in 63:28 for third. Many first-timers successfully tried the off-trail shortcuts along the ridge to #6 and down the reentrant to #9.

Many thanks are in order - Cooper Green mentored extensively on drafts of the courses, and vetted a few controls Jens was nervous about. Rick Waldo vetted all of Red, which led to tweaks to improve fairness. If you are hosting a meet, always schedule it when Rick is going to be out of town, as his vetting is detailed and insightful. Jeff Williams scouted and course tested earlier, and handled registration, staying very late to pack up. Ed O'Brien also did some course testing, and was going to help Jens with timing until Jens stepped out to do some quick instruction, and suddenly Ed was in charge of timing for the rest of the meet. Ed also helped pack up until Dr. Jess was loaded for Crooked Lake. Thanks also to the control pickup team. Igor Guskov, frequently consulted for tips on meet hosting, picked up many red flags. Andrew Rowan had a long pickup run out to the radio telescope. Dr. Jess grabbed several controls and a water stop. Mike Li and John Jones swept up the southwest red/green points.

Please consider drawing your route on the RouteGadget - a first time course setter will benefit immensely from seeing how people attacked the points.

If you want to get better at reading orienteering maps than you ever were, volunteer to assist a director with an eye towards holding your own meet!
